ARTIST
AS A CHILD, CALLAGHAN showed a remarkable gift for painting (four of six paintings from when he was age twelve, are the cover illustrations for the four-volume Morley Callaghan’s Collected Stories, 1995.) In 1972, as he began to write poetry, he also began to work on what came to be known as the Hogg Drawings - which were published as Book II of the Hogg Poems, and were exhibited at the Isaacs gallery in 1978. He continued to work sporadically as an artist, and in 1992, Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa) mounted a major exhibition of the Hogg Drawings, publishing a substantial catalogue that included several scholarly critical texts.
