JOURNALIST

CALLAGHAN BEGAN AS A part time journalist while in college working the summers of ‘57, ‘58, and ’59 at Canadian Press and CBC Television News in Toronto. He began publishing in newspapers in ’64 and in 1966 he was appointed as the Books editor at the Toronto Telegram. During this period, from 1961, he appeared regularly on CBC radio, as the Morningside book critic. He appeared regularly on radio to 1971.


In 1959 Callaghan was Canadian Correspondent for the Mutual Broadcasting Network in the US, appearing weekly throughout that year. Callaghan became known in his lifetime as one of the country’s most distinguished journalists, working in newspapers and magazines, and he is the recipient of every major award that can be given to a Canadian journalist.
